Taking care of our new beehives before the summer.

09 Apr
Taking care of our new beehives before the summer.

This week we have started taking care  of two new beehives which will be added on the roof and in the patio of our school. Someone, we don’t remember who, had the idea of decorating them. We thought it was a fantastic idea and our art teacher accepted to help us.

Eco-friendly , non toxic water-based but colourful  paints were bought to decorate the hives.

Some of us set down to work. As we were painting the hives, one of us started  to surf the net in the art room to see if there were other painted beehives somewhere else in the world. We found a treasure:  Slovenian beehives 🙂

We didn’t know anything about that unique form of folk art and we were amazed by the colours and the talent of the unknown artists. We also had a look at the map of Europe to locate Slovenia. We realised Slovenia was a neighbouring country of Italy and not far from our partners in Feltre in the Venezian province. We made a mistake there: Feltre is in the Belluno Province  ( Thank you, Marco, for your comment)

Have you ever seen those beehives in Slovenia, Italian team?

The French extended team : Elsa, Aurore, Ariane, Anaïs, Camille  … ( year 8)

What a super idea, to keep bees. Do you have special bee keepers to look after them and collect the honey?
The artwork is lovely too, beautiful bright colours and interesting designs.
Our school is having solar panels put on the roof this week (while we are on holiday) I’d much rather have bee hives. 🙂

What a nice idea! Keep us informed if the honey produced by happy bees, living in a colourful home, is better than the one you usually get. 😉
I will show this post to our Head Teacher… maybe he’ll get some ideas … 😉

It’s a brilliant idea to paint the new hive with special, non toxic paint. Bees don’t need more pollution . Congratulations !! I liked the Slovenian hives. They are so colourful!

Sorry, I didn’t see any Slovenian bee hives when I was there … but they are quite an interesting, unusual sight, so I will certainly ask the tourist information office next time I go 😉 ! You could certainly let your visitors know about the art work you realised respecting nature!

@ Giovanna: do you often go to Slovenia?

@ Marie-France: Well, not that often, but people from our area spend some of their summer holidays there, also further down in Croatia: a good portion of the area along the coast was once Italian. Some of those seaside resorts are really spectacular and not very expensive. Talking about summer holidays at the beginning of the school year pupils realized that some of them go to the same places in Croatia!

I have never seen any Slovenian beehives. To tell you the truth, Slovenia is about 350 km from Feltre, so it is quite far. But I would like to correct a mistake: Feltre is in the province territory of Belluno, not Venice J. By the way, I love honey, it’s delicious. Don’t you have some for me to taste? (just kidding ;))

We will correct our mistake, Marco. The correct version will be on the post in no time 😉 Sorry about the honey. We didn’t have a lot this year as the weather was rotten. All our crop was sold very quickly, too quickly 😉

    @ Mrs U,

Next year, our crop will be much better than this year. The weather was too bad last spring and last summer. Living in painted hives will help our bees to keep their spirits up. We are doing all we can to have them feel good in our school environment: no pesticides, no genetically modified crops around. We are thinking of planting bee-friendly plants ( clover, buttercups, chemical free flowers …)

    🙂

It takes a long time but it’s very funny to paint beehives. We have a great time together. But I hope the paint stays on the hives because we have got a lot of rain in Brittany France… 🙂

These hives are very pretty and our honey is super good! 🙂 Not enough jars this year because of the cold, damp weather 😦 What a pity!
