Everybody is unique

22 May

different1Today we didn’t have lessons at school, but a project about human beings being different. All students of year 7 took part in several workshops which made us understand the life of physically challenged people better.

Our class started at the gym, where we played basketball in wheelchairs…it was very difficult to score.

basketball Coming back we  tried to discover  our school … in wheelchairs again…and again it was difficult: steep slopes, stairs, the elevator, heavy doors, etc.

After that we had five more workshops: short films on integration, a discussion and short introductions into  ergotherapy, physiotherapy and speech therapy.

ergotherapyWe learned a lot today, although we didn’t have any ‘real’ lesson. 😉

Here is the free translation of a poem our German and Arts teacher, Frau Dr.Möhring, has written and recited today:

Eulogy to being different

Nobody can just get out of their skin – fortunately.

Nobody looks like you – well, maybe your twin.

Nobody thinks, feels and fools around like you – not even when imitating you.

different3 You are WHAT you are because of your parents, grandparents and great-grandparents.

You are WHO you are because of your parents, friends and fellows.

You are HOW you are because of your experiences, aspirations and dreams.

Love your neighbour as yourself.

Respect their individuality as you respect your own.

Do whatever you can to make that last.

My father can’t hear, but it isn’t a problem for me because we communicate just the same: he learnt to understand people’s labial language and he can be a happy person like everybody.

This morning we talked about what “care for people” and “take care” mean, then we read the recent posts. When we read the poem on being different I thought how well it expresses those special traits everybody has. Very well done indeed 🙂 !

Great, brilliant initiative. The only way to understand “difference” and “uniqueness”.
